A tough ask to pull this off, but Strout can do it. This is a writer creating a writer as her main character, and that character presenting us with a memoir. You'll just make sure to read all three novels about the woman who "came from nowhere" and who is the forthright and plain-spoken narrator of her life.
You won't need to have read the other two to revel in her wise, witty, humane writing.
